“How do you do that?” “You have to be from Yorkshire!”
This includes ideas stolen from Jonathan McElhinney and Zac Allin.
This one I can’t see used as the main focus of a session, I have used elements as part of a warm-up, or as “fillers” while I move poles around, or just a quick 5 minute activity because I’ve spotted something that may need to be worked on.
It’s a simple premise; just ask the paddlers what the outcome of a task is, and if they can improve within the set parameters.
For example:
How long can you surf on that wave for? How long can two of you surf on that wave for? How many turns can you do with 1 bow rudder, 1 reverse and 1 sweep? How few strokes can you get across the flow in? How high can you break out into that eddy? How high can you get your bow out of the water? How far can you turn with your stern in the water? How fast can you get from this eddy through that gate and back to this eddy?
You could ask them to watch each other and get feedback from each other. Just maybe more constructive feedback than a certain Lower Wharfe paddler who gave the feedback given above! (To be fair to Cody, he did go on to give some really useful and insightful advice!)
